Calculating recorder storage before buying disks

By the ECA Networks technical desk · Last updated 21 September 2026

Camera count alone cannot size storage. Resolution, frame rate, codec and retention policy all change the answer.

Short answer

Multiply stream bitrate by camera count, recording hours and retention days. Convert the result to terabytes and add margin for motion and system overhead.

Set the recording policy

Decide whether cameras record continuously or on motion, and how many days footage must remain available. Use the main stream bitrate, not the low resolution mobile stream.

  • Confirm resolution and frame rate
  • Choose H.265 or H.264 assumptions
  • Set recording hours per day
  • Add capacity for overhead and drive replacement

Leave operating room

Do not size the array to exactly the calculated number. Motion-heavy scenes and firmware reserves consume space, while usable disk capacity is lower than the label suggests.

Frequently asked questions

How much does H.265 actually save over H.264?+

Roughly forty to fifty percent less storage for comparable image quality, which is why most new NVR deployments default to H.265 where the cameras and recorder both support it.

How many days of retention is normal for a business premises?+

Thirty days is a common baseline, though the right figure depends on local guidance and how quickly an incident is typically reported and reviewed.
